Crispy Onion Pakora Indian style

Onion Pakora, a crispy Indian snack, features sliced onions in spiced chickpea batter, deep-fried to golden perfection.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 2-3 tablespoons rice flour (optional, for extra crispiness)
  • 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of baking soda (optional)
  • Water, as needed
  • Oil, for deep frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the gram flour, rice flour (if using), cumin seeds, carom seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt.
    • Add a little water at a time to form a thick batter. It should be thick enough to coat the onions well.
    • Add the sliced onions and green chilies to the batter and mix well. Make sure the onions are evenly coated.
  2. Fry the Pakoras:
    • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat.
    • Drop spoonfuls of the batter-coated onions into the hot oil. Fry until the pakoras are golden brown and crispy.
    • Remove the pakoras using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  3. Serve:
    • Serve the onion pakoras hot with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.

Enjoy your crispy, flavorful onion pakoras!
